Welcome to Terryglass

Terryglass (Tir Dha Ghlas) was the national winner of the Tidy Towns Competition 1983 and 1997.It is the first stopping point on the return down Lough Dergs Eastern shore. Terryglass situated beside Lough Derg provides an extensive and modern harbouring facility. Terryglass was the site of a monastery founded by St. Colman in the 6th century. It became a center of learning and produced, about 1150, the Book of Leinster now in Trinity College Dublin, an important collection of history, tales and poems in Middle Irish including the Brown Bull of Cooley. The Vikings frequently raided the abbey, and in 1264 the abbey was burnt. A remaining wall from this abbey can be seen at the back of Paddys pub in the village.
