Our People and CustomsLocated on the western edge of Europe, Ireland enjoys a rich heritage which does not stem just from local monuments or historic buildings but is to be found in the songs that people sing, the stories they tell, the games they play and the local place names rooted in the Irish language and history. The nourishment that comes from being part of a place which has history and tradition is particularly noticeable in Ireland. Time has failed to change the essence of the people and their culture. All sports , and in particular the breeding, training and racing of horses, provide an endless topic of conservation. The many festivals are a great unifying force - encompassing all social, cultural and economic aspects of life. The English language owes a huge debt to Irish writers over the centuries. The Irish way with words has resulted in a tradition of play writing, poetry and story telling which gave the world literary giants like Joyce, Shaw, O'Casey, Swift and Yeats. Today's young population is carrying on the tradition of the past using the technology of the present in film, music and dance. The glorious legacy of Irish literature and the art has survived centuries of foreign invasion, famine and civil war. This rich portrait of a proud and complex country and her people is reflected in the many products with established worldwide brand names where traditional craftsmanship, honed to fitness and precision produces these quality goods. |
