Welcome to Red Jack's Cottage at Powers Cross, Portumna, Co Galway

If youd like to stay in a two hundred year old, lovingly restored, traditional, thatched cottage set in a quiet countryside surrounded by farmland yet close to a huge range of amenities and facilities then Red Jacks is for you.

This unique, stone-built cottage is set on an acre of its own grounds and has plenty of parking and storage facilities. Located about five miles (8 km) from Portumna on Lough Derg drive, the house itself sleeps 6 people (cot also provided) with two upstairs bedrooms each having two single beds and a main double bedroom downstairs with a traditional iron and brass bed.

Other features of this three star Irish Tourist Board approved cottage include:

  •   Finished throughout in local wood.

  • Stone flag stone floor in main room

  •  Open turf burning stove (turf provided)

  • Display of traditional farm tools and antiques

  • Open loft bedroom, much loved by children, accessible by spiral staircase

  • Electric storage heaters and instant electric shower

  •  Fully equipped kitchen including microwave and coffeemaker

  • Separate utility room with washing machine and clothes dryer

  • Herb garden and barbecue area and equipment

  • Safe playing area for children around the house

                         

Amenities

Part of the main attraction of the cottage is its central location as places of special interest in Ireland are within easy driving distance:

  • Galway City (1 hour) and Connemara (1,5 hours)

  • The Burren and Cliffs of Moher (1.5 to 2 hours)

  • Clonmacnoise (1 hour)

  • Birr Castle (3/4 hour)

  • Beaches such as Lahinch (2hrs), Salthill (1 hour)

  • Shannon Airport (1 hour)

  • Limerick City (1 hour)

   There are also numerous attractions within a very short distance:

  • Portumna Forest Park, perfect for walking, deer spotting, bird watching etc.

  • Portumna Golf Club, an 18 hole course situated on the domain of the old Clanricard estate.

  • Portumna Castle, one of the greates castles in Ireland in the 14th century, home of the renowned Burkes of Clanricard with majestic views over Lough Derg. Castle is being restored at the moment and part of it is open to the public. (The walled garden is a special treat)

  •  Numerous pitch and putt courses

  • Go-Carting in Tynagh (4 / 5 miles)

  • Horse riding and trekking

  • Fishing and boating on Lough Derg or other little mountain lakes such as Loughatorick (6 / 7 miles) outside Woodford (Boats are available for hire in Portumna and Mountshannon)

  •  Pubs and Restaurants in Portumna itself or numerous towns and villages around (There is an official gourmet trail of Restaurants.)

  • Mountshannon and Holy Island. Visit pretty Mountshannon (winner of Irelands tidy town competition in the 1980s) and the ancient monastic site of Holy Island with its round tower and numerous ruined churches (15 miles boat ride from Mountshannon harbour)

  •  Bog walking within a few minutes walk from the cottage you can explore the flora and fauna of this unique but endangered habitat. 

  • Woodford (5 miles). This ancient iron mining town nestles into the wild rugged and largely unexplored Slieve Aughty mountains. The town came to international prominence in the late 19th century as the centre of the revolt against the infamous Marquis of Clanricard (original prints of the London Illustrated News on display in the cottage depict local scenes from this period). Nowadays the Woodford Heritage Centre holds the records of births, marriages and deaths from East Galway and visitors are welcome to trace family roots there. Woodford is also renowned for its numerous pubs which only come to life on weekend nights with music and dancing. Indeed, a visit to the area isnt complete until you come to Woodford on a Saturday night!

  • Numerous stone age remains including standing stones and wedge tombs

  •   Lovely drives such as the Woodford Loughatorick Flagmount Feakle Drive and many other

  •  Portumna itself with bars, supermarkets , bicycle hire etc. and the Shannon Oaks Hotel with its leisure centre and swimming pool (open to non-residents)

  • There is a small shop, post office and public phone within walking distance and even a small restaurant which must be booked in advance.

So whether you want to get away from it all and relax in a serene and peaceful environment or travel to see the various attractions, Red Jacks is an ideal choice for you!
