Welcome to Meelick Village

The little village of Meelick is in the parish of Eyrecourt in the southern part of County Galway. It is a rural area bordering on Counties Offaly and Tipperary and sits right on the confluence of the River Shannon and the Little Brosna. Meelick parish church is one of the few medieval churches in Ireland still used by the Catholic Church. This little 15th century Franciscan friary is situated on a hill overlooking the River Shannon. The landowners in the Meelick area in the 15th century were the O'Maddens and it was they who asked the Franciscan Monks to establish a monastery here. The O'Maddens acted as protectors of the monastery through many skirmishes and in the 16th century it escaped closure because of their protection.
