Portumna Angling Services

Coarse and Pike AnglingContact us for an Irish Angling Experience

Let us take this opportunity to introduce you to Angling in Ireland, or more precisely to angling on Lough Derg on the Shannon System. Lough Derg is the second largest lake in Ireland and covers 32,000 acres. This vast expanse of water is home to a large variety of fish ranging from specimen Pike to beautiful Trench, of 3kg plus.

Pike are the largest of our fresh water fish with specimens of 15kg plus being caught each year. We have a catch and release policy on these fish. Anyone breaking this rule on Pike is not welcome in the Portumna area. Pike can be fished from March until the end of October, dead bait is the best method and can be fished using float or can be trolled or fished using sink and draw, large lures or spinning bait can also be used with great success. A lake boat and outboard motor is a must to get to the hot spots to catch these great fighting fish.

Bream shoals are to be found on the Northern end of Lough Derg and these swims can only be accessed by boat and outboard motor, bags of 50-60kg are quite common and can be fished from both the shore and by boat, in calm weather the pole can be used by the angler, anchoring over the Bream shoal, large bags can be had using this method, pre-baiting is very important with at least 25-30 balls of ground bait being used each evening to hold the shoal in your swim overnight for the next days fishing.

Roach and Hybrids fishing is the best on the river Shannon itself with huge numbers of good Roach and Hybrids between Portumna and Meelick, some of these swims can be accessed by road and provide excellent fishing for the Angler.

Perch can be fished almost anywhere by using small spinning baits, worm or lures, once one fish is caught you can be sure theres plenty more where it came from!! The best fishing is to be had from the boat on the northern end of Lough Derg and at the mouth of the river Shannon where it flows into Lough Derg.

Eel are also quite common and can be found in some of the deeper pools on the River Shannon and Lough Derg. Eels can grow to 2kg plus. Worm is the best bait that can be used to catch these lovely fish.

Tench  are found in the more secluded bays around the northern end of the lake. These fish are never easy to catch, but early morning and late evenings are best. We know where they are, are you good enough to catch them
